The city of Monopoli has about 50,000 inhabitants and is located 43 km south-east of Bari city center, it is the most populous of the south of Apulia. Monopoli is one of the busiest ports and it’s quaint old history of early medieval origin is superimposed on the remains of the rich fortified town Messapico from the fifth century BC. Monopoli overlooks the sea and is surrounded by high walls. Monopoli is also known as the "city of a hundred lands" and it’s coast is small, about 13 km long and jagged. With over 25 beautiful coves and wide expanses of sand it is ideal for swimming and exploring the underwater life. Many of the beach resorts are located in th chapter 6 km from the city, which is also the nightlife center of Monopoli during the Summer.
