Tradition assigns the foundation date of 706 BC to Taranto, that was among the most important cities of Magna Grecia. The city lies between two seas: the Mar Grande and Mar Piccolo, joined by the famous swing bridge, for this reason it is called the "City of the two seas." It is home to a large industrial and commercial port and the largest naval station of the Italian Navy. Taranto is also an important industrial center with ironworks (including the largest steel center of Europe), petrochemical, shipbuilding and cement industry.
